Memphis Heritage is hosting the 3rd Adapt-A-Door design competition and fundraiser on August 27th. For those asking, "What the heck is an Adapt-A-Door competition?," here's the scoop.
Almost 100 teams or individuals choose from a collection of doors, gathered to be recycled, and are given the task of transforming the doors into works of art. The only limitation is that 70% of the original door must be used.
In 2009, 5 of us worked for over 2 months developing a concept that was a creative reflection of the design ideals of the team members. The result was an art piece which provided a functional reuse of a recycled door that highlighted the intricate details of the wood itself.
Our piece eventually won Best In Show and earned an impressive amount of money for Memphis Heritage during the silent auction.
In 2010, our team once again designed a concept but a large project deadline kept us from completing contruction.
This year, the team again challenged ourselves to create something that combines adaptive reuse principles, clean design and showcases the uniqueness of the original door. This site is a showcase of our results. Enjoy!
